The
Need
Today
it is economically and personally beneficial - and many would say
essential - to pursue at least some higher education. Unfortunately,
many adults, particularly those who attended large urban schools,
are unprepared for the academic or social requirements of postsecondary
education. Many do not believe that they have the financial or academic
resources to enroll in a college or university nor are they aware
of how to make the transition when they become interested.
The
Purpose
As
part of our mission, The Philadelphia Education Fund seeks to ensure
that higher education is accessible to everyone. In addition to
our work in the School District of Philadelphia, we sponsor a 6-credit
college course in the humanities for non-degreed adults who would
like to explore college enrollment.
In
collaboration with Bard College in New York and Temple University,
the Philadelphia Education Fund recently initiated the "Bard
College Clemente Course in Humanities" for non-degreed,
low-income adults seeking to earn college credit. This 28-week
course, which focuses on the Humanities, (including Literature
and Poetry, Art History, American History, Moral Philosophy,
Critical Thinking & Writing) is free to eligible participants.
All courses are taught by a team of Temple University professors.
Students enjoy rigorous homework assignments and
engaging classroom discussions that earn them six (6) college
credits from Bard College. Most of all, they been exposed
to the rigor and high expectations of postsecondary education.
