Philadelphia Education Fund is a supporter of Our City-Our Schools

Our City-Our Schools has just launched a new website. Our City-Our Schools is a partnership of organizing groups that work together to build their power for better schools. Each group works in its own way, but the groups collaborate on shared priorities. The Philadelphia Education Fund is among the school reform groups that are frequent partners in Our City-Our Schools campaigns.

Ed Fund and Partners Voice Support for School Funding

On March 11, the Philadelphia Education Fund and 12 partner organizations issued a statement in support of school funding. In the statement, we urge state officials to maintain strong funding to school districts. There is no better investment in our city, our region, and our state.

Dr. Bill Ouchi Discusses Weighted Student Funding

On Wednesday March 24th, the Education First Compact received a special presentation from Dr. Bill Ouchi about Weighted Student Funding (WSF). WSF is a new School District of Philadelphia initiative that can potentially change how Philadelphia public schools get funding as well as how much money they can receive. Dr. Ouchi, a renowned professor from UCLA, has written extensively about WSF and its implementation across the country.

David Weiner, Chief Accountability Officer for the School District of Philadelphia, who is leading the implementation of the WSF project, co-hosted the meeting.

Tomás Hanna and Jerry Jordan Discuss the New PFT Contract during Special Education First Compact Meeting

On Thursday, February 18th, Tomás Hanna, Chief of Staff, School District of Philadelphia, and Jerry Jordan, President, Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, gave an important presentation about the new PFT contract during a special meeting of the Education First Compact. The presentation highlighted key achievements in the new contract.

Research for Action Co-Founder and Senior Research Fellow Guest Speaker for February Education First Compact Meeting

Eva Gold, Co-Founder and Senior Research Fellow for Research for Action (RFA), was the guest speaker for the February 2010 Education First Compact meeting. Dr. Gold discussed RFA’s recently released report Transition to High School: School “Choice” and Freshman Year in Philadelphia.

During the discussion, Dr. Gold spoke about the relationship between school selection and neighborhood high schools and the interventions in place to support transitions into high school.

Pennsylvania Secretary of Planning and Policy Guest Speaker for Education First Compact Meeting

Donna Cooper, Secretary of Planning and Policy for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, was the guest speaker at the January 2010 Education First Compact meeting. Ms. Cooper discussed the Governor’s priorities around education, important Pennsylvania Department of Education policies, the 2010-2011 state budget, and the general context of new federal education funding.

Philadelphia Effective Teaching Campaign Meets with Mayor Nutter

On October 8, 2009, members of the Philadelphia Effective Teaching Campaign, a partnership between the Philadelphia Education Fund’s Education First Compact and the Philadelphia Cross City Campaign for School Reform, united at City Hall to present Mayor Nutter with over 1,000 postcard petitions calling for a teacher contract that meets the needs of the city's 160,000 public school students.

This event demonstrated that the general public is interested, knowledgeable, and awaiting a contract that will dramatically improve the quality of education in Philadelphia.
