Application Requirements

Philadelphia Teacher Residency is in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania, Graduate School of Education (PennGSE). Candidates must apply to both PTR (steps 1, 2, 4 & 5) as well as PennGSE (step 3). While the Praxis examinations are not required for admission, we strongly encourage candidates to take all of the requisite exams before July 1, 2012. Please see five steps below; refer to these Frequently Asked Questions; and contact our Recruitment Manager for further assistance.

PTR reviews applications using a "rolling" admissions model with three review cycles. We encourage you to apply early, since the cohort size and scholarship funding is limited.

3. Apply to the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education 

Begin the online application for the Master's Degree of Secondary Education. Please be sure to upload a copy of your UPenn application materials to your PTR applicant profile (see "Apply to PTR" above).

4. Participate in the PTR Selection Day 

The Selection Day is a variety of group activities to assess the dispositions and skills of PTR candidates. In order to be eligible to attend a Selection Day, candidates must have spoken to the PTR Recruitment Manager. 

Fall Selection Day: December 3, 2011

Winter Selection Day: March 3, 2012

Spring Selection Day: June 2, 2012

Take the Praxis exams 

In accordance with the Pennsylvania Department of Education, all teacher candidates for initial certification must pass the Praxis Exams for their certification area. Candidates must complete the Praxis I as well as Praxis II in the subject area that they plan to teach. Please designate PTR as a score recipient, code #2668. It is required that candidates complete the Praxis I exam prior to starting their residency, and have at least scheduled to take the Praxis II subject area exam before June 15, 2011.
